Power BI (Part 1): Data Modeling and Validation for Student Reporting
In this hands-on workshop, you will focus on the foundation of reliable reporting in Power BI by defining relationships, creating measures, and validating results using data from Blackbaud Education Management. Working with student and athletics data stored as CSV files, you will learn how to shape your data model to support accurate analysis and meaningful insights.
You will explore how to build relationships between tables, create measures to summarize student performance, and validate your results to ensure your report reflects real-world data scenarios. Along the way, you will practice techniques for evaluating data quality and understanding how model design impacts report accuracy.
This session is Part 1 of a two-part series. It is designed to prepare you for building an interactive report experience in Power BI (Part 2): Designing Interactive Reports for Student Insights.
Advanced Preparation:
- Students wishing to build during this session should have Power BI Desktop installed.
- Access to sample CSV files (Cumulative GPA and Athletics Roster) will be provided.
Learning Objectives:
- Define relationships between tables to support accurate reporting
- Create measures to summarize student and athletics data
- Validate results using data exploration and filtering techniques
